EdWeek Features EPIC’s Work in Texas

Edweek

An article recently published in Education Week, the leading publication in the industry, highlights Texas’s efforts to improve state education. EPIC’s work is a foundation for many of the developments featured in the story, demonstrating the center’s role as a key player supporting massive education projects, in this case initiated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This is a role EPIC is proud to have.

The article emphasizes the creation of the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). EPIC researchers facilitated the process of creating the CCRS, working closely with vertical writing teams, designing an online application to collect public comments, and revising the standards based on feedback. EPIC then conducted a validation study in which postsecondary faculty rated how important the CCRS where to student success in their classes.

Also mentioned in the article is the creation of Reference Course Profiles that exemplify the content and rigor of a typical course based upon the CCRS. To create these materials EPIC researchers utilized the data from the validation study to solicit classroom materials from participating faculty, and facilitated design teams that compiled the sample materials. The Reference Course Profiles will be available later this year.

The article also mentions progress in other states, including South Carolina. The state is working with EPIC to design "paired courses," which link the content between high school and college courses.
